You may know of this already, but Gorman & Sejnowski have a paper on
sonar return classification in Neural Networks Vol. 1, #1, pg 75,
where a net did better than nearest neighbor, and comparable to a
person.

I would be very interested in obtaining your list of "better-than-
conventional-methods" papers, if possible (maybe the whole connectionists
list would, for that matter).
