Networks for pattern recognition problems?

Rich- our experience with the solar data is still inconclusive, but would
seem to indicate that neural nets have exhibit no distinct advantage over
more traditional techniques, in terms of 'best' performance figures. The
reason appears to be that although the task is understood to be non-linear,
(which should presumably lead to better performance by non-linear systems
such as networks), there is not enough data at the critical points to define
the boundaries of the decision surface. This would seem to be a difficulty that
all recognition problems must deal with.
