Weight Behavior in the Boltzmann Machine

A question for someone who is familiar with the mathematics of the
Boltzmann machine:

As the network converges during learning, do the weights monotonically
increase or decrease to their optimal values, or do they "hop around"
until they hit their final value and stabilize? 

A mathematical explanation would be nice.
