From cl at cmu.edu Fri Jan 12 17:47:18 2024 From: cl at cmu.edu (Christian Lebiere) Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2024 17:47:18 -0500 Subject: [ACT-R-users] News Message-ID: First, a reminder that the 2024 ACT-R Workshop will take place on July 23 at Tilburg University, Netherlands in association with the MathPsych/ICCM conference . That date is a day after the main MathPsych/ICCM program, and a day before the Cognitive Science conference in nearby Rotterdam. Hopefully it will be convenient for attendees of both conferences to participate in the workshop. Second, Andrea Stocco and colleagues (including myself) have a new open access paper in Computational Brain and Behavior (also available on the ACT-R website ) titled "An Integrated Computational Framework for the Neurobiology of Memory Based on the ACT?R Declarative Memory System" which might be useful as an introduction to ACT-R for a neuroscience audience. [All details about this school can be found online at https://www.nengo.ai/summer-school] The Centre for Theoretical Neuroscience at the University of Waterloo is excited to announce our 9th annual Nengo summer school on large-scale brain modelling and neuromorphic computing. This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to neuromorphic hardware and will learn to run high-level applications using Nengo! More generally, Nengo provides users with a versatile and powerful environment for designing cognitive and neural systems and has been used to build what is currently the world's largest functional brain model, Spaun, which includes spiking deep learning, reinforcement learning, adaptive motor control, and cognitive control networks. For a look at the last in-person summer school, check out this short video: https://youtu.be/vRcN5-0wdQE We welcome applications from all interested graduate students, postdocs, professors, and industry professionals with a relevant background. ***Application Deadline: February 1, 2024*** Format: A combination of tutorials and project-based work. Participants are encouraged to bring their own ideas for projects, which may focus on testing hypotheses, modelling neural or cognitive data, implementing specific behavioural functions with neurons, expanding past models, or providing a proof-of-concept of various neural mechanisms. Hands-on tutorials, work on individual or group projects, and talks from invited faculty members will make up the bulk of day-to-day activities. A project demonstration event will be held on the last day of the school, with prizes for strong projects! Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to: * interface Nengo with various kinds of neuromorphic hardware (e.g. BrainDrop, SpiNNaker) * build perceptual, motor, and sophisticated cognitive models using spiking neurons * model anatomical, electrophysiological, cognitive, and behavioural data * use a variety of single cell models within a large-scale model * integrate machine learning methods into biologically oriented models * interface Nengo with cameras and robotic systems * implement modern nonlinear control methods in neural models * and much more? Date and Location: June 2nd to June 14th, 2024 at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Applications: Please visit http://www.nengo.ai/summer-school, where you can find more information regarding costs, travel, lodging, along with an application form listing required materials. If you have any questions about the school or the application process, please contact Michael Furlong (michael.furlong at uwaterloo.ca). The school is partly supported by ABR, Inc. We look forward to hearing from you! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This is Shan, a PhD candidate at Penn State. As I was learning Cognitive Modeling and ACT-R, I encountered difficulties and found it intimidating to start. I also found that my experience is not uncommon via chats with my colleagues. I wonder, why don't we make the process easier so that more students and researchers can join the research community. Some researchers have made their efforts, but there has not been a comprehensive report of the pain points and difficulties along the journey, to help guide future designs and improvements. This project aims to understand the pain points comprehensively via interviews. (This is also part of my PhD dissertation, so please help me out!) You are very welcome to schedule a time, if you know about ACT-R but not continue learning it, if you are learning ACT-R, if you have learned and built models for years, if you have been teaching ACT-R for years, and if you have decided to not use it anymore. I understand that you have a busy schedule, so here is the link to schedule the interview. It won't last over one hour, and you can stop whenever you want. https://calendly.com/sxw820/usabilityinterview Please feel free to share the email and link with your students and colleagues who know about ACT-R but not continue learning it, are learning ACT-R, have learned and building models for years, have been teaching ACT-R for years, and who decided to not use it anymore. Thank you for your time ahead! Looking forward to your responses! Rumelhart Prize will be open from 22 Jan - 23 Feb 2024. The Prize is the world's leading annual prize in the theoretical study of human cognition, and has a monetary value of $100,000. Internationally preeminent scholars from the very wide range of disciplines relevant to human cognition are eligible. The David E. Rumelhart Prize is awarded annually to an individual or collaborative team making a significant contemporary contribution to the theoretical foundations of human cognition. Contributions may be formal in nature: mathematical modeling of human cognitive processes, formal analysis of language and other products of human cognitive activity, and computational analyses of human cognition using symbolic or nonsymbolic frameworks all fall within the scope of the award. The prize consists of a handcrafted, custom bronze medal, a certificate, a citation of the awardee's contribution, and a monetary award of $100,000. Applications can be submitted at this link:https://forms.gle/xhkNENnpPHeBXu5W7 [All details about this school can be found online at https://www.nengo.ai/summer-school] The Centre for Theoretical Neuroscience at the University of Waterloo is excited to announce our 9th annual Nengo summer school on large-scale brain modelling and neuromorphic computing. ***Application Deadline: February 15, 2024*** Format: A combination of tutorials and project-based work.
