From C.P.Janssen at uu.nl Wed May 10 05:44:39 2023 From: C.P.Janssen at uu.nl (Janssen, C.P. (Chris)) Date: Wed, 10 May 2023 09:44:39 +0000 Subject: [ACT-R-users] 2 PhD students in Utrecht on AI, Cognitive Science, HCI and mobility Message-ID: Dear ACT-R community, Leendert van Maanen and I are currently recruiting two PhD candidates at the intersection of AI, Cognitive Science, HCI, and Mobility. The PhD candidates would work in multidisciplinary teams at Utrecht University. Modeling experience is greatly appreciated. Please see below for their description and links to the advertisements (through which you can apply). Both positions would start this fall. Best wishes, Chris Janssen Utrecht University PhD position 1: Cooperation between Human Operators and AI Algorithms in the Railway Sector Deadline: May 21st This PhD research project will investigate how humans operate in the logistical planning process of the railways, as well as how the contribution of automated planners can be made insightful for human operators and vice versa. The PhD candidate will use a variety of social science and AI methods, with a particular emphasis on computational cognitive modeling of decision-making and controlled experiments on human decision-making. Moreover, through collaboration with external partners (NS and ProRail) the PhD candidate has a unique opportunity to conduct qualitative and quantitative studies with operators that are responsible for rail planning. Supervision is by Dr. Chris Janssen, Dr. Leendert van Maanen, Dr. Silja Renooij, and Prof. Dr. Mehdi Dastani. The project is part of the wider LTP Robust project and the RAIL lab. Note that the position has a Dutch language requirement. The PhD research project will investigate how individual differences in decision-making can be modeled in digital twins of urban mobility (e.g., cars, pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation in different urban settings) in a validated, more psychologically plausible way. The project offers an exciting opportunity for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI, Cognitive Science, Geosciences, and Computer Science. Moreover, there is active collaboration between Utrecht University, the research institute TNO, crowd simulation company uCrowds, and the municipality of Utrecht. Supervision is by Dr. Chris Janssen, Dr. Leendert van Maanen, Dr. Bas Spierings, Dr. Roland Geraerts, and Dr. Taoufik Bakri (TNO The Hague). The project is funded through the Utrecht AI Labs and TNO. The proposed symposium would be Oct 25-27 in Washington, D.C. A criterion for acceptance of the proposal (draft attached) is to demonstrate that there is sufficient interest to warrant the symposium. Thus, we are sending this out far and wide and asking people who *might* be interested in attending to contact us and indicate their interest. If you are interested, all you need to do is send an email to *laird at umich.edu * and include: Your name Your organization Your email address If the proposal is accepted, a more formal announcement will be made which will include information on how to apply for participation. So, do not send any papers at this time! Also, please distribute this to other people and mailing lists!
