The position can be held for 3 years and is paid according to the German Civil Service Pay Scale (TV?D-13). The positions requires residence in Munich and must result in a PhD thesis. Earliest starting date is 1 March 2013. Applications are accepted until the post is filled. Research Topic: Numerous applications have been conceived for autonomously acting robotic systems, be it in form of explorative systems in space, service-and-care robots, or search-and-rescue robots in disaster zones, to name but a few. However, at present, robots lack the flexibility to react in unforeseen situations. Currently, important perceptual and decision-making structures are still designed by programmers before the robot begins its task, leading to fragmented abilities and brittle performance. Hence, perhaps the greatest challenge in the engineering of autonomously acting machines remains the instillation of flexibility in the robot?s decision-making processes that would allow it to adapt to the demands presented by a dynamically changing environment at any given moment, whilst still pursuing a particular operative goal (as opposed to purely reflexive systems). Although considerable progress has been made in the domain of machine learning and artificial intelligence in recent years, real-time learning and in particular adaptive behavior of robots in unforeseen situations remain a great challenge in robotics. Rather than focusing on the development of increasingly complex machine learning algorithms, an alternative approach to addressing this problem would be to investigate the cognitive processes of humans, who excel at quickly making decisions that lead to adaptive behavior in dynamic environments, and to transfer relevant processes to robotic systems. Your objective will be to develop ACT-R models of specific human cognitive processes and ascertain to which extent these models may serve to increase a robot?s ability to display adaptive behavior in unforeseen situations. Qualifications: - You are required to hold an excellent M.Sc. in Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Psychology or a related discipline and should have some programming knowledge. - You should be highly motivated and possess the competence to work independently in a team, as well as enjoy facing interdisciplinary challenges. - Experience in the field of robotics and/or ACT-R is an advantage. - Fluency in written and spoken English (TOEFL 620, IELTS 7,5, Cambridge Advanced CAE). - German language skills are useful, but not mandatory. The University: The Universit?t der Bundeswehr M?nchen, which has become an integral part of both the national and international research communities, reflects Humboldt?s ideal of a university that not only teaches but also conducts research. CALL FOR PAPERS Design, Programming and Learning of Complex Systems special session 2013 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation - CEC 2013 June 20-23, Cancun, M?xico http://www.dmi.unict.it/omlcs-cec2013/ Many problems in all the traditional research areas, such as science, engineering, physics, biology, and medicine are often hard to solve, mainly due to the difficulty in understanding their indirect causes and effects, which are not related in an obvious way. Therefore, studying how a system interacts with the environment, or how simple components give rise to the global collective behavior of the system, or even how parts of a system interact with each other, is nowadays one of the most challenging and interesting research areas in every discipline because of its utmost relevance. In the field of complex systems there currently exist several sophisticated tools that can help us to study the systems in an in-depth manner, through analytical models, and from a computational point of view, describing their model and the way it is simulated. The special session aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the field of complex systems, particularly in regards to the development of new analytical models and novel applications, as well as on the design of new nature-inspired optimization algorithms. Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished papers on any topics related to complex systems. * IMPORTANT DATES: paper submission: February 15, 2013 Notification of Acceptance: April 08, 2013 Final Paper Submission: April 26, 2013 * PAPER SUBMISSION: Manuscripts should be prepared according to the standard format and page limit of regular papers specified in CEC 2013 webpage, and submitted via the official submission system of CEC 2013. LOCATION The city of Plzen (Pilsen) is situated in Western Bohemia at the confluence of four rivers. With its 170,000 inhabitants it is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic and an important industrial, commercial, and administrative centre. It is also the capital of the Pilsen Region. In addition, it has been selected as the European capital of culture for 2015 by the Council of the European Union. Pilsen is well-known for its brewing tradition. The trademark Pilsner-Urquell has a good reputation all over the world thanks to the traditional recipe, high quality hops and good groundwater. Beer lovers will also appreciate a visit to the Brewery Museum or the Brewery itself. Apart from its delicious beer, Pilsen hides lots of treasures in its core. The city can boast the second largest synagogue in Europe. The dominant of the old part of the city center is definitely the 13th-century Gothic cathedral featuring the highest tower in Bohemia (102.34 m). It is possible to go up and admire the view of the city. Not far from the cathedral is the splendid Renaissance Town Hall from 1558 and plenty of pleasant cafes and pubs are situated on and around the main square. There is also the beautiful Pilsen Historical Underground - under the city center, a complex network of passageways and cellars can be found. They are about 14 km long and visitors can see the most beautiful part of this labyrinth during the tour. It is recommended to visit the City Zoological Garden, having the second largest space for bears in Europe and keeping several Komodo dragons, large lizards which exist only in a few zoos in the world. The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen provides a variety of courses for both Czech and international students. It is the only institution of higher education in this part of the country which prepares students for careers in engineering (electrical and mechanical), science (computer science, applied mathematics, physics, and mechanics), education (both primary and secondary), economics, philosophy, politics, archeology, anthropology, foreign languages, law and public administration, art and design. GETTING THERE The city has access from the D5 motorway connecting Prague (Praha) with Germany. Pilsen has very good bus and train connections with the capital of Prague (it takes about 1 - 1.5 hour to get from Prague to Pilsen). >From Vaclav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) you can reach Pilsen by frequent public transport in 1.5 - 2 hours. ACCOMMODATION The organising committee has arranged accommodation for reasonable prices in the angelo Hotel Pilsen, which is situated in the city center in walking distance from the main railway station and opposite to the historical entrance of the Pilsner Urquell Brewery. There are a lot of restaurants in hotel neighbourhood offering specialities of national and foreign cuisine. Student halls of residence will be also available at the time of conference. We cordially invite you to submit a paper to ICNC-FSKD 2013, to be jointly held from 23-25 July 2013 in Shenyang, China. Shenyang, the largest city in Northeast China, has a celebrated history dating back to the Warring States of 476 BC. It is the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and has many cultural relics which symbolize the prosperity and subsequent decline of the last feudal dynasty in China. Shenyang has one of China's the two best preserved imperial palace complexes, along with the famous Zhaoling Tomb and Fuling Tomb. Shenyang is also renowned for its mild summer and mouth-watering local food. As with the past ICNC-FSKD conferences, all papers in conference proceedings will be submitted to both EI Compendex and ISTP (ISI Proceedings), as well as IEEE Xplore. Extended versions of selected best papers will appear in an ICNC-FSKD special issue of International Journal of Intelligent Systems (Impact Factor: 1.653), an SCI-indexed journal. ICNC-FSKD 2013 is technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. ICNC-FSKD is a premier international forum for scientists and researchers to present the state of the art of data mining and intelligent methods inspired from nature, particularly biological, linguistic, and physical systems, with applications to computers, circuits, systems, control, robotics, communications, and more. This is an exciting and emerging interdisciplinary area in which a wide range of theory and methodologies are being investigated and developed to tackle complex and challenging problems. The registration fee of US-D390 includes proceedings, lunches, dinners, banquet, coffee breaks, and all technical sessions. To promote international participation of researchers from outside the country/region where the conference is held (i.e., China?s mainland), researchers outside of China?s mainland are encouraged to propose invited sessions. An honorarium of US-D400 will be enjoyed by the organizer(s) for each completed (with at least 6 registered papers) invited session. The first author of each paper in an invited session must not be affiliated with an organization in China?s mainland. "(Invited Paper)" may be added below the title of each paper in the invited sessions. Invited session organizers will solicit submissions, conduct reviews and recommend accept/reject decisions on the submitted papers. Invited session organizers will be able to set their own submission and review schedules, as long as a set of recommended papers is determined by 3 June 2013. Each invited session proposal should include: (1) the name, bio, and contact information of each organizer of the invited session; (2) the title and a short synopsis of the invited session. Please send your proposal to icnc_fskd_2013 at 126.com For more information, visit the conference web page: http://icnc-fskd.lntu.edu.cn/ If you have any questions after visiting the conference web page, please email the secretariat at icnc_fskd_2013 at 126.com Join us at this major event in historical Shenyang !!! My approach follows the procedures set out in the ACT-R 6 readme. To make it work, I made a few changes to my system: 1. I installed Clozure Common Lisp (CCL) [1] instead of the more typical Common Lisp (CLISP), following their instructions for setting the path, etc 2. I saved ACT-R6 into a directory where I put code ~/Code/actr6 3. I created a copy of the 'load-act-r-6' startup script by adding a new line at the bottom that calls the '(start-environment)' 4. Then I wrote a little bash script [2] that performs the readme steps in the right order so that I only have to call a single file to have my ACT-R and the Tcl/Tk GUI, too [1] http://ccl.clozure.com/ [2] https://gist.github.com/usuallycwdillon/5025926 R, Clarence -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The first is that instead of modifying the ACT-R load file you can create a new lisp file with the start-environment call in it and put that file into the user-loads directory. Every .lisp file in that directory is loaded automatically by the ACT-R load file after all the main ACT-R code. That way you won't have to modify the load file again if you update your ACT-R source code. The other suggestion is that instead of putting a fixed sleep time into the startup script you could have the lisp code repeatedly try to connect to the environment until it succeeds with something like this: (while (null (start-environment)) (sleep 1)) That way it may be ready sooner and will also still start even if for some reason the environment takes longer to get going than the fixed time specified.
